Abstract

1,099,897. Escapements. UNITED STATES TIME CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1966 [Sept. 29, 1965], No.40058/66. Heading G3T. An escapement mechanism for a watch comprises an index wheel 60 and a helical gear 26 mounted on a staff 32, means being provided to axially move the helical gear once every second from an initial setting position to a rapid indexing motion. A seconds hand 22 and a seconds wheel 14 are mounted on a shaft 20 pivoted between bridges 16, 18. A curved arm 80 attached to a frame plate 10 is biased into engagement with one of four spokes 78 which define slots 84 in the index wheel 60. The index wheel is rotated through one revolution in four seconds by a lever 48 which is oscillated by a pin 68 attached to a roller 66 fixed on a balance staff 70. Rotation of the index wheel 60 causes the arm 80 to enter one of the slots 84 so that a spring 42 cams the staff 32 and the helical gear 26 upwards. The teeth 28 of the helical gear thus cause a sudden intermittent rotation of the seconds wheel 14 and the arm 80 engages the edge 87 of the following spoke 78 so that further rotation of the index wheel cams the gear 26 back to its initial position.
