[Class 94 (i).] Relates to packing-machines of the kind in which the articles are advanced through the first part of the machine, for instance, for a preliminary wrapping, by an initial feeding device, and subsequently, after the articles have been grouped into a stack, the stack is moved through another wrapping device by a second feeding device operating at a different speed. According to the invention, which is applicable to machines such as are described in Specifications 256,383, 264,068, and 264,385, [all in Class 94 (i), Packing &c.], means are provided for varying the relative speeds of the feeding devices according to the number of articles that are grouped to form a stack, and the speed of the initial feeding device may be varied according to the ratio between the two speeds. The initial feeding device is driven from a shaft 5, Fig. 2, by chain and sprocket gearing 30, and this shaft is adapted to be clutched to a driven shaft 12, from which the second feeding device is operated, by the engagement of one of a series of gears 6, 7, 8 with one of a series 9, 10, 11. The gears 6, 7, 8 are fast on the shaft 5 and the gears 9, 10, 11 are loose on the shaft 12 unless clutched thereto. A control rod 20, Figs. 5 and 6, passes through the centre of the shaft, and through slots 19 in clutch keys 14 disposed in sockets 13. Cam surfaces 21 are disposed in different angular positions on the rod, so that, on adjusting the rod, one or other of the clutch keys 14 is released to be urged by springs 15 to engage a keyway 18, thus causing rotation of the shaft 12 at the appropriate speed. The rod 20 has a tongue and groove connection with an extension 23 carrying a knob and dial 25 by which it is operated, and which is normally urged towards a disc 26 by a spring 24. A pin 27 is adapted to enter one of three holes 28 to ensure accuracy of adjustment. In order to vary the speed of the shaft 5, if necessary, a driven shaft 12a, similar to the shaft 12, is interposed between the prime mover 5a and the shaft 5.
