671,220. Expanding pulleys. STEVENS, A. H. (Gerbing Manufacturing Corporation). May 25, 1949, No. 13970/49. Class 80 (ii). Opposed flanges 4, 5 of single or multiple expanding pulleys are connected together for equa' and opposite axial movement by diametrically opposite keys 11 sliding ir slotted keyways in the supporting shaft, pinned at 12, 14 to the respective flanges and connected together by an equalizing pinion 18 carried in a diametral slot in the shaft and meshing rack-teeth on 'the keys. A spring 25, enclosed by a sleeve 26 and abutment plate 21 loads the flanges to the closed position snd a lubricator 32 is provided in the plate 21. With two pulleys side-by-side on a common shaft, either in parallel or series, the respective flanges are connected by separate pairs of keys engaging two separate equalizing pinions mounted side-by-side in the shaft. A twin series pulley Fig. 8 (not shown) for use on a countershaft, dispenses with the loading spring 25, loading being effected by belt tension only.
