A winding mechanism for a toy crane comprises, on a base-plate 10, two parallel walls 11, 12 with axially aligned pairs of slots 13, 16; 14, 17; and 15, 18 forming bearings for shafts 33, 28, 34 respectively carrying gear-wheels 31, 30, 32, the shaft 28 having a hand crank 29 and being axially movable between two positions, and gear-wheel 31 being axially displaced relative to gear-wheel 32 by a distance equal to that between said two positions of the shaft 28 so that the gear-wheel 30 on shaft 28 meshes with gear-wheel 31 in one axial position and with gear-wheel 32 in the other axial position. A detent 27 on a resilient plastics arm 26 engages grooves 35 or 36 in the shaft 28 to hold it in one or other axial position. Shafts 33, 34 are identical. Each has a squared end (38) (Fig. 3, not shown) engageable by a U-shaped detent spring 23 or 24 and a squared portion (39) which receives the gear-wheel 31 or 32. Gear-wheels 31, 32 are identical, and are formed with extended hubs so that they assume one or other of the axial positions according to which way they are fitted to their shafts. A cover plate 46 retains the shafts in their bearing slots.
