Abstract
752,315. Variable-speed gearing. BROWN, S. C. Oct. 21, 1954, No. 30397/54. Class 80(2) In variable-speed friction gearing comprising an idler ball 9 movable longitudinally between cylindrical and conical rollers 3, 7, magnetic means for maintaining the ball in frictional contact with the rollers comprises a permanent magnet 14 whose two pole pieces 12, 13 of opposite polarity extend close beneath and parallel to the ball path along the whole length of the path. The magnet 14 is mounted on a base 16 by two compression springs 17 and a screw bolt 18 at each end, the bolts being adjustable by worm- and-pinion gearing 19, 20. As used in weight-integrating mechanism for belt conveyers, the ball is displaced automatically along its path in accordance with the load on a predetermined length of the belt, the two rollers 3, 7 are connected to two elements of a differential gear 6 and the shaft 11 of the third element of the gear 6 drives recording mechanism.
