737,600. Variable-speed gearing. CROSS, A. R. March 12, 1954 [March 12, 1953], No. 6796/53. Class 80 (2). A variable-speed gearing comprises two parallel and opposite arranged cone pulleys 1, 5 engaged by the wider edge of an endless V-belt 6. A pair of intermedially arranged idler pulleys 9, 10 engage the normal driving sides of the belt. Such pulleys may be moved by sliding the rod 7 on which they are carried to vary the axial position of the belt 6 on the pulleys 1, 5 and hence the gear ratio. Spring or other means may vary the distance apart of the idlers 9, 10 to adjust or maintain the belt tension. The bearings supporting the rollers 1, 5 may be adjusted in slots 14, 15 in the gearing frame. Two or more V-belts arranged side by side may be used.
