Class 78 (1) In conveyers consisting of a series of parallel endless screws, e.g. S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP>, and S<SP>3</SP>, the shafts of the screws are connected by eccentrically mounted non-circular gears, e.g. elliptical gears 1, 2, 3, the central one of which is driven at constant speed. If it is desired that the screws rotate in the same direction, circular gears 1a, 2b are mounted on the shafts of the screws S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> and are engaged by similar gears 1b, 2a mounted on the shafts of the gears 1, 2. In a modification, Fig. 6, a single screw S is surrounded by a housing G having an internal thread corresponding in profile and mean pitch to the screw. The screw is driven by an elliptical gear E<SP>1</SP> and the housing by a circular gear Z mounted on the shaft of the elliptical gear E‹ which is driven at constant speed. The pitch of the screws can increase or decrease progressively in the direction of conveyance and each screw may consist of two equal parts of opposite hand.
