Class 86 [Also in Group V] A rotatable cylinder 1 is mounted by its ends in bearings 5, 6 and is rotated by a toothed wheel 11 keyed to it. A scroll 2 is rotated by a toothed wheel 8 and variable speed gearing and/or reversing gearing may be used for varying the relative rotations of the wheels 8 and 11. Either the scroll or the cylinder may be rotated alone. The bore of the cylinder is rifled at 1a in a direction to oppose the scroll, and the rifling may be in a shrunk liner. A heating or cooling jacket 10 may be incorporated.
