Abstract
1330567 Quenching pipes A O SMITH CORP 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 25033/71 Heading C7N A pipe 1 is heated in an oven 14 and lowered by a cable 7 through a quenching station 13 where inner and outer streams of e.g. water are directed against the pipe through rotating heads 24 and 46, the pressure of the streams being of the order of 1000 p.s.i. and the rate of rotation of the streams being 90 to 270 degrees per sec. The inner head 24 is driven by hydraulic motors 42 through gears 43, and the quenching fluid is supplied through the stem 21. The fluid may be recirculated. The outer head 46 is driven by hydraulic motors 66 through gears 68, 69 and the quenching fluid is supplied through a pipe 64. The pipe is centred as it passes through the quenching station by rollers 76, biased by hydraulic cylinders 78, and by shoes 81 having lead surfaces 80.
