Abstract

1369941 Boring earth &c ROBBINS CO 13 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 32879/72 Heading E1F In a drill having guide columns 18, a frame 22 movable up and down the columns, a motor 38 rotating a member 88, a rotary head 92, 110 having portion 110 connected to a drill pipe 122, and a driving connection 90, 91 between the member 88 and the head, the head is mounted on the frame in bearings 94, 96 permitting limited tilting movement of the head and the driving connection does not transfer this movement to the member 88. The portion 110 is axially movable in the portion 92 on splines 116, and the connection 90, 91 is formed by splines. The frame is moved by cylinders 42 which move on rods 44 fixed to a base 12. The cylinders are connected by a plate 52 and a swivel mounted below the plate supplies drilling fluid to a tube 124. The weight of the drill stem 122 and the portion 110 is balanced by the apparatus disclosed in Specification 1362554.
