Abstract

1367480 Boring earth &c TENNECO OIL CO 20 Dec 1971 [8 April 1971] 58961/71 Heading ElF Rotary drilling apparatus comprises a rotary table 24 vertically reciprocated by the rods 22 of rams 21 mounted on a base 10 which fixedly supports a clamp 25. The clamp comprises opposed rings of slips 26 moved by jacks 28 to engage or disengage with the drill string 12, the arrangement being that when the slips are engaged the string is fixed against both upward and downward movement. The table has a clamp 40 driven by a hydraulic motor mounted on the table and of simliar construction to that of the clamp 25. Drill feed pressure may be controlled by the rams although drill collars may be added to the string. The apparatus may be used for adding pipe sections to or removing them from, the string, a swivel 17a being fitted to an additional section whilst drilling proceeds using a swivel 17. The top of the well has a stripping sleeve 71. and blow out preventers 72, 73.
