Abstract

628,266. Well-boring apparatus. HETHERINGTON, J., LANCHESTER, G. H., and STERLING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30825. [Class 85] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXX] A well-drilling equipment is mounted on a chassis 3 carried on a vehicle frame 2 and at the site is independently supported on jacks 127. The chassis 3 carries a rotary drill table 80, Kelly chuck 95, a derrick formed of two or more hinged sections 7, 12, motors 25, 38, mud pumps, and the auxiliary pumps and generators. The motor 25 drives the rotary table whilst the motor 38 drives the mud pumps 36; the two motors may be coupled together but normally function independently of each other. The rotary table is carried on a platform 62 pivotally mounted at 69 in slipper blocks 66 which slide in guides 67 formed on the chassis 3 so that the table may be withdrawn from over the borehole by a ram 74 after the completion of drilling, in order that the well casing may be inserted. The platform 62 is levelled by adjusting screws 72. The Kelly chuck 95 is carried on rams 96 so that positive upward and downward pressure may be applied. Two sets of chuck jaws 115, 115a are provided and are caused to grip the Kelly chuck by conical sleeves being forced axially in the chuck as a buttress toothed ring 110 is rotated, the buttress teeth moving over corresponding teeth formed on the sleeves 112. The motor-driven drillraising means may be disconnected and a manuallyoperated inching means provided for making small adjustments. Specification 628,267, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
