Abstract
1,249,440. Boring earth etc; wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 17 June, 1970, No. 29423/70. Heading EIF. A conductor is drilled into the sea-bed by a drill contained in the conductor and rotating an annular cutter shoe at the lower end of the conductor as well as the bit. The conductor 5 has a base 29 and is connected by a coupling 54 to a supporting string 60, the coupling having guide arms 57 engaging guides 34 extending from the base. The drill 46 is connected by a bumper sub 51, 53 and drill collars 50 to the string, and has a shaft 45 carrying the bit 42 and having a splined connection with the cutter shoe 37 which carries wheels 41. The conductor and drill are lowered from the drilling station until extensions 31 on the base are fixed in the sea bed and pins 30 shear. The drill is actuated by fluid. supplied through the string and the string is lowered until the base rests on the sea-bed. The coupling is released from the conductor, the drill is raised within the conductor and the conductor is cemented by supplying cement through the string and drill. Alternatively, the conductor may be cemented by completely withdrawing the drill, and coupling a cementing string (Fig. 2 not shown) to the conductor, a packer on the string. preventing cement the conductor. In a modification of the drilling; apparatus (Fig. 1, not shown) the drill is fixed to the supporting string which has a coupling removably fixed to the top of the conductor, the base is fixed to the conductor and is without the extensions and the shoe has an annulus of cutting teeth. Fig. 4 shows a conductor have a greater length' than the. depth of water overlying the sea-bed. The conductor is supported by a coupling 70 having an inlet 72 for the fluid driving the drill 81 which is fixed to the conductor by a packer-coupling 83. After the conductor reaches a suitable depth, a base member and a supporting string are fixed to the top of the conductor, fluid is supplied through the string to drive the drill until the base seats on the sea-bed, and the conductor is cemented and the drill removed. Sections may be added to the conductor during sinking and telescopic joints may be fitted in the conductor and string to compensate for waves. In a modification a base of the form shown in Fig. 3 is coupled to the lower end of the conductor. The drill may be a reversible pump, a hydraulic turbine, or an electric motor.
