Abstract

984,061. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov. 19, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961], No. 43724/62. Heading E1F. A pipe string in a well is connected to the wellhead by cutting the string at a point below the landing surface of the wellhead, withdrawing the top portion of the string from the well, running into the well a pipe section, hanging the section in the wellhead with a lower portion in telescopic relationship with the top of the portion of the string remaining in the well, and anchoring the top of the string remaining in the well to the pipe. A casing 32 stuck in an underwater well is cut at 41, the upper portion 32a being removed from the well and the top of the remaining portion sinking to 41a. A hanger 42 including the pipe section 50 is lowered by a running tool 61 over the top of the remaining portion of the casing. The remaining portion is tensioned by a spear 63, and when the spear is withdrawn the remaining portion is supported by the hanger which in turn is supported by the landing surface 40 of the wellhead 23. The casing may be cemented prior to cutting.
