Abstract

1361296 Boring earth &c SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 24 Aug 1971 39636/71 Heading E1F Prior to drilling and completing an underwater well a conductor 9 is cemented into the sea-bed 5, a pedestal conductor 10 having a buoyancy member 3 is connected by a coupling 12 to the conductor and blowout preventers are fixed to the top of the pedestal conductor. The member is suspended from a vessel 1, the conductor is lowered through the member, the pedestal conductor is connected by the coupling 12 to the conductor, the pedestal conductor and conductor are lowered through the member, and the pedestal conductor is connected to the member by a coupling 11. Drill pipe 15 carrying a hydraulic turbine 14 with drill bit 23 is lowered through the pedestal conductor and conductor to engage the drill bit with a cutting shoe 13 rotatable on the conductor, and a coupling 16 between the drill pipe and the conductor is engaged. The coupling 12 is released, the drill pipe is lowered and the turbine operated until the top of the conductor is just above the sea-bed. The coupling 16 is disconnected, the drill pipe is raised, a packer 17 on the drill pipe is set in the conductor, and cement is passed down the drill pipe to cement the conductor. The member is weighted and the pedestal conductor is lowered and connected to the conductor by the coupling 12. The weighting is removed from the member, the packer is released, the drill pipe removed and the preventers are fixed. In a modification the pedestal conductor may be coupled to the conductor prior to cementing the conductor. Instead of lowering the pedestal conductor on cables 26 it may be coupled to the drill pipe and lowered. The lower part of the drill pipe including coupling 16, packer, turbine and bit may be lowered into and coupled to the conductor before the conductor is coupled to the pedestal conductor, the upper part of the drill pipe then being lowered and coupled to the lower part immediately after the member has been coupled to the pedestal conductor.
