Abstract

1,029,739. Boring earth &c. SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 26, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962], No. 37996/63. Heading E1F. A sub-aqueous well is drilled by lowering a drill string 21 having a bit 25 from a platform 11 at the surface until the bit contacts the formation to be drilled, drilling a hole 31 in the formation with the bit, lowering a rod 35 through the string and through an axial opening 26 in the bit, and removing the string and bit from the hole to the platform, the lower end of the rod remaining in the hole. During drilling of the hole a core bit and barrel 27, 28 is latched in the bit 25, the core bit and barrel being removed by a fishing tool 32 when the hole is complete. The rod which is of a length slightly greater than the depth of the water at the hole is lowered through the string, and the string is raised, the upper end of the rod being prevented from passing through the bit by a bar 36. The string is removed from the rod at the platform whilst the rod extends from within the hole to the platform. A conduct pipe 41 is lowered over the rod into the hole by a running tool 45, and the pipe is cemented into the hole after the rod has been removed. In use of the apparatus shown in Figs. 7 and 8, a rod 35a is dropped through the string 21a after the core bit and barrel 27a, 28a have been removed. The string is raised about the rod a reamer bit 50 being added to the string before the bit 25a passes the upper part of the rod, and the string is rebuilt, lowered, and rotated to enlarge the top of the hole 31a after the rod is removed. When the hole has been sufficiently enlarged to receive a conductor pipe, a longer rod is dropped through the string to extend to the surface, the string including the bits is removed, the conductor pipe is slid down the rod, and the pipe is cemented after the rod is removed.
