Abstract

A rock drill bit, which is particularly suitable for drilling bores of a large diameter in ground containing boulders or rock strata, comprises a body which carries at its drilling end a number of cutters some of which are movable from inner positions in the body to the outer positions in which they will, when the drill is operated within a casing, cut a bore of a diameter which is greater than the outer diameter of the casing. In use this drill bit is lowered into a cylindrical casing with the movable cutting members in their inner positions until they are below the lower end of the casing, after which they are moved outwardly into their cutting positions, so that they will then cut a bore of a diameter which is at least equal to the outer diameter of the casing. During drilling, at least through rock, the drill bit is advanced and oscillated or rotated at the same speed and as a single unit with the casing. <IMAGE>
