Abstract

941,236. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 25, 1962 [April 27, 1961], No. 15765/62. Heading E1F. A connector for use with underwater wellhead equipment comprises a housing 71 having a bore 84, a chamber 72 in the housing, outwardly-extensible latches 70 carried by the housing, a piston 73 in the housing for actuating the latches, a conduit 90 permitting the supply of pressure fluid from the bore to the chamber to force the piston downwardly to extend the latches, and a conduit 86 permitting the supply of pressure fluid from the bore to the chamber to force the piston upwardly to free the latches. The connector may be used for running-in apparatus to the well, or removing apparatus from the well, and as shown in Fig. 2 is in use for running-in casing 40 and casing hangar 41. A ring 48 slidable on the body of the hangar is adapted to seat in the casing head 28, a seal 49 being interposed between the ring and body. Slips 50 are initially held retracted on the hangar by screws 63. On a barge above the well a pipe string 23 is fixed to the connector, the connector is inserted into the hangar, a dart 83 is placed in the bore 84, and fluid pressure is applied to the string to extend the latches and fix the connector to the hangar. As the extension of the latches also forces pins 64 into engagement with the slips the screws are removed without the slips extending. The hangar and casing are lowered by the string from the barge until the hangar seats in the casing head, the dart 83 is replaced by a dart 88, fluid pressure is applied to the string to free the latches, and the string and connector are raised to the surface. The retraction of the latches frees the slips which are urged by springs 56 to engage the surface 55 of the casing head. A cementing string 85 may be suspended from the connector.
