Abstract

1,255,404. Wells &c. BYRON JACKSON Inc. 9 May, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 23870/ 69. Heading E1F. A cementing plug launching apparatus comprises a tubular mandrel 112 in communication with a fluid conduit 141 and releasably supporting top and bottom cementing plugs TP, BP in the upper end of casing C2 closable by a member 114 connected to the mandrel. In the sub-aqueous apparatus shown the plug TP is connected to the mandrel by pins 177 and the plug BP is connected to the plug TP by pins 206. A float shoe S contains a ball valve 111b to prevent fluid flowing back into the casing. In use the launching apparatus is lowered as a unit on to the wellhead and the member 114 screwed in place on casing hanger 100. A resilient ball is inserted in the conduit 141 in advance of a quantity of cement slurry and passes downwardly through the mandrel to land in a seat 210 in the plug BP, shearing the pins 206. The plug BP then travels downwardly until it reaches the float shoe S whereupon the resilient ball is forced through a passage 209 so that the cement can escape through ports 213. A non-resilient ball behind the cement slurry then lands in a seat 183 on the plug TP shearing the pins 177 so that the plug TP descends to seat on the plug BP. The launching apparatus is retrieved by unscrewing the member 114 from the casing hanger. In an alternative embodiment for "on land" use, Fig. 10 (not shown) the mandrel is connected to the casing (C4) by means of an adaptor (314) and a casing coupling (317). The member 114 may be replaced by a member which is latched on to the casing head.
