Abstract

1,261,490. Boring earth &c. GENERAL OIL TOOLS Inc. 16 Dec., 1970 [12 Jan., 1970], No. 49674/70. Heading E1F. Borehole drilling apparatus comprises a mandrel 23 connected to a drill string 22, a packer 25 connected at one end to the mandrel and having the other end slidable along the mandrel from a drilling position in which the packer is disengaged from the borehole wall to a packing position in which the packer engages the wall, and means 61, 62 to latch the packer in the disengaged position. The other end of the packer is fixed to a retractor 60 having latches 61 mounted on spring fingers 67 and cooperating with grooves 62, 65 in the mandrel and a sleeve 27 respectively, the sleeve carrying the bit (not shown). The interior of the sleeve has bars 29 engaging mandrel grooves 30, 34 in the drilling and packing positions respectively. The apparatus is lowered into the borehole with the packer held disengaged from the wall by the latches engaging the groove 62, the sleeve being supported by its bars engaging between teeth 51 on the mandrel (as shown). When the bit reaches the hole bottom further lowering of the mandrel forces cams 54 to direct the blocks into the grooves 30 so that rotation and pressure on the string causes the bit to extend the borehole. The apparatus is set in the packing position by raising and lowering the mandrel so that the blocks enter the grooves 34 and the packer is compressed to engage the wall. As the mandrel is lowered to compress the packer a projection 64 on the sleeve transfers the latches from the groove 62 to the groove 65 to provide means to move the retractor when the sleeve and mandrel return to the drilling position. When the packer is engaged with the wall holes 85 in the sleeve communicate with holes 88 in the mandrel so that formation fluids may be sampled or the formation may be treated. The packer may set to act as a down-hole blowout preventer. A rotary stabilizer 78 is fitted on the top of the sleeve, a second stabilizer may be fitted above the packer, and drill collars may be fitted between the bit and the lower end of the sleeve. During fishing operations teeth 83 are engaged to prevent relative rotation between the top of the sleeve and the packer and teeth 82, 84 are engaged to prevent the stabilizer rotating on the sleeve.
