Abstract
1483789 Boring earth &c. AMOCO PRODUCTION CO 7 Nov 1974 48221/74 Heading E1F A downhole drilling tool which can be manipulated from the surface to drill either a straight bore or directionally, comprises a hollow torque member I, Fig. 9 for incorporation into a drill string adjacent the drill bit, an inner eccentric sleeve 11 rotatably mounted on the torque member, an outer cam sleeve 10 rotatably mounted on the inner sleeve, means 3, 53, 54, Fig. 4, to releasably secure the outer sleeve to the inner sleeve and means 1, 51, 52 to releasably secure the outer sleeve to the torque member 1. The inner sleeve is also directly releasably secured to the torquer member by means of a spring-biassed piston stem 9 engaging in a hole 18 in the inner sleeve, the stem being retracted out of engagement by the application of mud pressure in the torque member. To alter the straight-drilling configuration of Fig. 4 to an eccentric directionaldrilling configuration (Fig. 3 not shown) the outer sleeve 10 is rotated through 180‹ with respect to the inner sleeve 11.
