Abstract

1,241,063. Boring earth. SMITH INDUSTRIES INTERNATIONAL Inc. 5 Aug., 1968 [7 June, 1968], No. 37233/68. Heading E1F. Drilling apparatus comprises a non-rotating drill string 8, a down hole motor 20, a rotating bit 28, an orienting device 32 below the motor and having means, e.g. ribs 34, projecting laterally to bear against the hole formation and bias the drill bit in a lateral direction opposite to that of the ribs in order to either deflect the drill bit or counterbalance a tendency for the drill bit to be deflected, and a second orienting device 16 above device 32. Ribs 34 may be fixed or hydraulically movable. The orienting device 16 may have hydraulically movable shoes 18, or ribs (44) on a sleeve splined to the drill string to permit angular adjustment of the sleeve with respect to the string on dismantling of the string. Orienting device 32 instead of being threaded to the motor housing as shown may be similarly splined.
