Abstract

1,136,740. Boring earth &c. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. 13 Dec., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 55772/66. Heading E1F. A hydraulic jet method for well-drilling consists in rotating a pipestring carrying a bit in the borehole, and circulating an abrasive drilling liquid through the string to the bit from where it is discharged through nozzles at a velocity of at least 152 metres/second to cut a central hole 62 surrounded by concentric grooves 64, 66, 68, the outer grooves 68 having an outer diameter equal to the borehole diameter, breaking the ridges 70, 72, 74 left between the grooves with the bit, and circulating the liquid up the borehole to the surface where the cut and broken particles are removed. The bit, in one arrangement, is similar to that described in Specification 1136739 and the edges of the breaker bars may be chamfered. In a modification, the breaker bars are asymmetrically arranged.
