Abstract

1446828 Jetting drills GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 15 July 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 31278/74 Heading E1F To improve the rate of abrasive jet drilling of earth and rock structures there is secured to the lower end face of a jetting drill a number of generally sectorially shaped face plates 32a-32d that are so manufactured from an abrasive resistant material that on the lower face of each plate there is formed an arcuate wedge 60a-60d having a centre of curvature that lies on the axis of rotation of the bit so that in use of the bit each wedge extends into one of the concentric grooves formed in the bottom of the hole being drilled by the abrasive material-carrying jets leaving nozzles 40a-40d extending from within the bit down through the lower end of the, bit and the face plates. The wedges serve to break away the ridges defining the grooves. Preferably the nozzles cut four concentric grooves about a central hole, there are four face plates, and the wedges on opposite of these face plates are at the same radial distance from the axis of rotation of the bit so that one pair of wedges enter the first groove and the other pair of wedges enter the third of the grooves as numbered outwards from the central hole.
