Abstract

995,599. Boring earth &c. HUGHES TOOL CO. Jan. 21, 1964 [Jan. 21, 1963], No. 2679/64. Heading E1F. In a rotary-percussive bit having a cylindrical or slightly conical wall 6, a base 3 generally transverse to the axis 12 of the drill, and blunt cutting inserts 30 in the base, the row 11 of the inserts are inclined relative to the axis. Although Fig. 1 shows a flat base 3, and Fig. 7 shows a convex base 28 and a base 29 stepped inwardly towards the axis, the base may also be concave or stepped outwardly towards the axis. The base and side wall are softer than the rest of the bit and the inserts are force fitted into holes in the base. The side wall may have grooves 26, or inserts 27, to prevent wear. A flushing liquid supply bore 18, has distributing channels 16, the liquid flowing upwardly past the part 32 of the bit through channels 22, 34.
