Abstract

1,160,409. Boring earth &c. MINDRILL Ltd. 4 Sept., 1967 [28 Sept., 1966], No. 40366/67. Heading E1F. In a core drill the inner tube assembly 20 is suspended from a spindle 12 by a bearing 18, and the leading end of the assembly has a stepped portion 23 which, during drilling, enters 'as a running fit into a cylindrical bore 24 in the bit 3. The assembly is longitudinally split, or has a split metal lining, or has a non split transparent plastics lining. The spindle and assembly are held down by a spring 34 and during drilling are positioned as shown on the right hand side of the drawing. Drilling fluid passes along the outside of the assembly and is discharged through apertures 28 in the bit. When core fills the assembly, the spindle and assembly are forced to the position shown in the left hand side of the drawing, the ports 9 closing so that a rise in drilling fluid pressure indicates that the assembly is filled with core. On removal of the drill from the hole, the core is severed by a core breaker 26 comprising a longitudinally split frusto-conical steel spring. In a modification the spindle and assembly are held up by a spring instead of 'being held down by the spring 34. Specification 1160410 is referred to.
