Abstract

985,367. Boring earth, &c. SERVCO CO. Sept. 9, 1963 [Sept. 14, 1962], No. 35472/63. Heading E1F. A drill bit 10 having discharge passages 52, 72 respectively for washing and jetting fluids is adapted to receive a stopper 90 for closing the passage 72 and a tubular member 130 for closing the passages 52. The bit is disposed adjacent a milled-out portion of a casing 18, the stopper is lowered into the central bore 22 of the bit, and washing fluid is pumped to the bore to issue from the passages 52 to remove detritus. The stopper is removed and cement is pumped through the bore to form a plug 104 which initially extends into the upper part of the casing. A tube 110 is inserted into the bore to which drilling fluid is supplied whilst the bit is rotated to drill away the upper part of the plug, the fluid issuing from passages 64. After the top of the plug has been removed the tube is replaced by the tubular member 130, and drilling fluid supplied to the bore discharges from the passage 72 to form a cavity 150. The tubular member is replaced by the tube and the bit is rotated, the bit sliding into the cavity so that further bit rotation cuts an angled hole. Instead of cutter blades 70 the bit may have roller cones.
