Abstract
897,893. Boring earth. JERSEY PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO. March 14, 1960 [Aug. 10, 1959], No. 8898/60. Class 85. A rotary bit comprises a rotary support member 25, a blade-like cutter 20 extending axially from the member, and an axially slidable shoe 22 adapted to support and protect the cutter and having a cutting part 41. The shoe is slidable on the member which has a passage 28 leading drilling fluid to an annulus 30 which is connected by ducts 186 to grooves 42 in the bottom of the shoe. During drilling of "soft" formations the cutter protrudes below the shoe. When drilling "hard" formations the pressure of the drilling fluid is increased so that the cutter is shielded by the bottom of the shoe which cuts the formation. The cutter and shoe have splines 46, 47 inclined to the axis of the bit so that downward pressure on the cutter tends to force it outwards to compensate for cutter wear. In a modification (Fig. 7 not shown) the member carries three equally spaced cutters each engaging a slot in the shoe. In the construction shown in Fig. 13, the member 84 is tubular and carries a cutter 86, the upper part of the shoe 85 sliding within the member. The cutting part 111 of the shoe which may be constituted by rollers is supplied with drilling fluid through a bore 93. The pressure on the shoe may be controlled by removing a plug 92 from the bore or by substituting a plug having a different throat diameter. In the further modification shown in Fig. 19 the plug 127 is removed by an overshot 162 when "soft" formations are drilled by the cutter 124. As shown in Fig. 24 a plug 167 may be provided the plug being removed from the bore by coupling it to a stopper 172 and reversing the circulation of drilling fluid. In yet another modification (Fig. 25 not shown) a spring loaded valve prevents flow to or from the annulus so that the cutter and shoe are not relatively movable when drilling fluid is not flowing. Specification 867,672 is referred to.
