Abstract

1,265,071. Boring earth and rock. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 30 April, 1969, No. 22061/69. Heading E1F. Diamonds 2 having cutting tips are arranged in the side wall of a bit body 1, and are set in a non cutting attitude in a direction radial to the central axis of the bit, and in a cutting attitude in a tangential direction. This prevents oversize hole cutting when the bit is rotated. The bit body is formed of sintered tungsten carbide grains on a steel shank 4 rotatable by a drill string or down hole motor. Cooling fluid is supplied to waterways 3 from the drill string via a channel 9, which may be offset to prevent the bit from taking a core. The bit may be used with a reamer or stabilizer and may have a bevelled upper cutting portion to facilitate retrieval.
