Abstract

1344921 Boring earth and rock SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 23 April 1971 11031/71 Heading E1F A rotary diamond bit has diamonds 5 arranged in a single row along one of the side walls of each of a number of mud channels 2, at least in the region 9, 10 of the face of the bit, and each diamond has a scraping edge 19 defined by intersecting plane surfaces 16. 18 of the diamond, one of the planes coinciding with a side wall 14 of the channel 2. The diamonds may be cubes, Fig. 4, triangle shaped, or in the form of a quarter sphere. Diamonds in adjacent channels are offset so that the ridges left between the. cutting annuli of the diamonds in one channel are cut by the diamonds in the adjacent channel. The triangle shaped diamonds may be set close together to present a continuous scraping edge. The channels may slant relative to the axis of the bit. Non cutting diamonds may be provided in the region 6 of the bit surface to maintain the gauge of the hole. The bit may be used with a reamer and/or rubber or steel stabilizer. The diamonds are set by glueing them to the interior of a lathe cut graphite mould in which the tungsten carbide bit body 1 is formed. The body has a steel shank 4.
