Abstract

1465185 Mining tools, augers; core samplers KENNAMETAL INC 12 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 06420/74 Heading E1F A point attack pick for mounting for free rotation about its longitudinal axis on mining tools, earth augers and core samplers comprises a body 76 that is axially shorter than and of greater diameter than the integrally associated shank 74 and a co-axial, forwardly tapering, hard metal carbide insert 90 having a head portion and a stem 88 that is considerably smaller in diameter than the head portion and is cemented in the leading portion of the body 76 so that the rear face of the head portion abuts the front face of the body, which has an axial length as long as the axial length of the head portion. The shank 74 can be so retained in a bore in a mounting block of the tool by a keeper 78 engaging in a groove in the shank 74 that the rear face of the body 76 abuts the front face of the block. All the faces at the stepped portions of the pick are perpendicular to the axis thereof. The head portion of the insert 90 may have a cylindrical rear portion, a conically tapered intermediate portion and a conical leading portion of greater taper than the intermediate portion. The stem of the insert is preferably of substantially the same diameter as the shank 74 and is of substantially half the length of the body 76, which may have a slightly tapered portion at the leading end. Such picks are mounted in blocks on rotatably driven carriers as disclosed in the referred to Specification 1241250. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1241250.
