Abstract
1478880 Abrasive tools LM VAN MOPPES & SONS Ltd 26 Sept 1975 [27 Sept 1974] 42126/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division E1] A reaming shell for use in drilling apparatus comprises a body 10 with a screw threaded leading end 11 for connection to a drill bit, e.g. a coring bit (Fig. 1, not shown), and a screw threaded trailing end for connection to following elements of a drill string. The body 10 has a cylindrical outer surface wherein are set a number of elongate panels P of cutting diamonds surface set in a metallic alloy, the panels P extending up to the leading end of the body 10 and being tapered so that they increase in thickness towards their rear ends, the reaming diameter of the shell thus increasing rearwardly from the leading end. Preferably the panels P have square leading ends set flush with the leading end of the body 10, and the panels protrude radially outwardly from the cylindrical outer surface, the outer surfaces of the panels being part conical. Diamonds of at most 20 stones per carat are set in the alloy of the panels so that their external surfaces are generally flush with the panel outer surfaces.
