Abstract

1394202 Boring earth &c INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 3 May 1972 [3 May 1971] 20588/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division Fl] Apparatus for maintaining pressure in the working cylinder of a jack 11 comprises a source 20 of pressurised hydraulic fluid, a jack 14 pivoted at 15, a jack 16 pivoted at 17 and connected to the jack 14 by an articulated joint 18, and a guide 19 for the joint, the jack 14 being inclined to the guide at all positions of the joint, the jack 14 or 16 being connected to the source 20, and the jack 16 or 14 being arranged to provide working fluid at the maintained pressure. Each of the jacks 14, 16 may be replaced by a pair of jacks in parallel to form a group and groups may be arranged in series, the jacks 14 of the first group being connected to the source and the jacks 16 of the last group being connected to the jack 11. In drilling from a floating installation having a vertical movement of hm the pressure applied to the jack 11 ensures that the drill string (not shown) supported from the hook 3 carried by the jack 11 is maintained under a substantially constant tension The source is a hydropneumatic accumulator but an accumulator in which the working fluid may be subjected to pressure from a spring may be used. The jack 16 may be in line wth the guide.
