Abstract

[Also in Divisions E1-E2 and F2] An apparatus for handling an elastic column, such as a flexible drill column 1, comprises sequentially actuated gripping devices such as 6, 8 at least one of which is movable along the column axis to raise or lower the column, and each of which have a plurality of individual gripping elements 18a-18d interconnected by elastic means 20a-20c. The sequence of operations for lifting and lowering the column is controlled by manual or automatic actuation of an electrical and hydraulic arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), which ensures that at least one of the devices 6, 8 is always gripping the column. Each gripping element such as 18a comprises jaws 15, 16 movable into and out of engagement with the column by single- or double-acting hydraulic jacks 17a, 17b. The jacks are articulated to a tubular housing integral with a sleeve 19a which receives a housing of an adjacent element 18b. The elastic connection 20a may comprise an elastomer, springs or fluid pressure jacks. The jaws 15, 16 may be provided with elastomeric linings. The gripping elements of a gripping device may be actuated simultaneously or in succession. The column may be a cable.
