Abstract

[Also in Division F2] An apparatus for handling an elastic column such as a flexible drill column 1, comprises sequentially actuated gripping devices such as 6, 8 at least one of which is movable along the column axis to raise or lower the column, and each of which comprises a plurality of individual gripping elements 18 a-d suspended from a single support 23 permitting relative axial movement of the elements. The sequence of operations for lifting and lowering the column is controlled by manual or automatic actuation of an electrical and hydraulic arrangement, Figure 5 (not shown) which ensures that at least one of the devices 6, 8 is always gripping the column. Each gripping element comprises jaws 15, 16, Figure 2, movable into and out of engagement with the column by single or double acting jacks 17a, b. The jaws 15, 16 may be provided with elastomeric linings. Each element is suspended by rods 124a-d, Figure 4, from a system of rocking levers 21 pivoted to the support 23 so that relative axial displacement of the elements can occur under the action of a load. The gripping elements of a gripping device may be actuated simultaneously or in succession. The column may be a cable.
