Abstract
1,228,247. Subaqueous drilling. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 8 May, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 21837/68. Heading E1F. Apparatus operable from a surface installation 1 for driving into the underwater floor 2 an elongated member constituted by a plurality of elements 14a-c adapted to be connected end to end, includes a base member 4 seated on the underwater floor and provided with a central aperture 5 for the passage of the elongated member and with upstanding rigid guide columns 6 and 7, substantially parallel guide cables 8, 9 connecting the surface installation to the respective tops of the guide columns, a drill head 16 slidable along the guide columns and provided with means for gripping the elongated member and with a submersible motor for driving the elongated member into the underwater floor, and a connecting element 83 provided with guide means 81, 82 arranged to ride down the guide cable and to be seated onto the top of the guide elements, the connecting element being adapted for detachable connection with the top of an element of the elongated member and being suspended by a flexible line for successively lowering the elements constituting the elongated member. The drill head is moved up and down columns 6, 7 by chains 19, 20 driven by a hydraulic motor, or by the columns being constituted either by racks engaging driven pinions on the head or by rotatable worms having non-rotatable nuts secured to the head. The gripping means comprise spring urged shoes which prevent longitudinal movement of the elongate member and which are releasable by a hydraulic cylinder. The drilling head has a rotor with further gripping elements which, when the rotor rotates in one direction, are cammed inwardly to grip and thus rotate the elongate member. Lowermostelement 14a has a drill crown 15. The apparatus may be used to produce core samples, for in situ measuring, or to obtain a lined borehole to be filled with reinforcements and cement to constitute a underwater anchorage. In the apparatus shown a pipe 72 feeds flushing liquid to the bore hole and carries a core barrel 64 with a tubular cutting element 93. The core barrel has fingers movable outwardly to engage element 14a below shoulder 88 when pipe 72 is supplied with fluid under pressure.
