Abstract

1,153,880. Boring earth &c. B. PERI. 23 Dec., 1966 [29 April, 1966], No. 57631/66. Heading E1F. In a floating drilling rig, the drill string is raised and lowered by reciprocation of a gripping device 2 movable below or in the vicinity of the centre of gravity, and power means to apply an extracting force to device 2. Thus, the tower 8 can be of light contruction since it has to support only one stand of pipe when disconnected from the string. The gripping device may comprise wedges moved to grip or release the pipe by hydraulic jacks, and be raised or lowered by motor 3 via cables 3. the string being held by a gripping device 7 during the return stroke of device 2. Device 7 may be a fixed clamp or alternatively may be similar to device 2 to allow rotation of the string whilst gripped. In other arrangements, device 2 is moved by hydraulic rams or a buoyancy chamber.
