Abstract
937,894. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Jan. 2, 1962 [Jan. 3, 1961], No. 140/62. Class 85. [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for carrying out operations at a sub-aqueous wellhead comprises a pipe at the wellhead, a manipulator device, grasping means carried by the device and adapted to engage the pipe to removably position the device adjacent the pipe, and a prime mover in the device for propelling it around the pipe. The prime mover is hydraulic or electric, and is installed within the body 41 of the device 20. On the body are mounted four pairs of arms 24, 25 which may be actuated to grasp loosely the pipe 12 adjacent tracks 14, 15. The track 15 is cut as a gear wheel, and is engaged by a worm 52 which drives the device about the pipe. A part 40 is telescopically mounted on the body, and carries a telescopic arm 46, 47 having a wrench socket 49 or other tool. To permit the operations to be observed from the surface the body carries lights 60 and television cameras 61. After lowering or sinking the device to the level of the pipe, the device is urged towards the pipe by a propeller 65 enclosed in a tube 62 having a rudder 66 to permit the arms to grasp the pipe. The worm and lower track may be dispensed with, and the device may be driven by a friction wheel, or by a propeller and tube arranged at right angles to the one shown.
