Abstract

981,765. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 21, 1963 [May 23, 1962], No. 20248/63. Heading E1F. Apparatus for forming a connection between a platform at the surface of a body of water, and a subaqueous wellhead comprises an elongated tubular member having wellhead locating means at its lower end. A marine conductor pipe 26 is lowered from a vessel 11 and has a landing head 27 adapted to engage and latch on to the wellhead 24. The landing head has propulsion means 30, 31, 32 and television cameras 33, 34 for guiding the head into position over the wellhead before lowering. The vessel is moved, or the upper end of the pipe is moved on the vessel, to align the pipe vertically above the wellhead. Instead of using the television cameras, the wellhead may be located by a sonar system, or radio active detectors on the landing head may coast with radio active material on the wellhead. A blowout preventer 45 may be fitted above the landing head. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the wellhead has ram and bag type blowout preventers 103, 104 and a flexible joint 105 is interposed in the conductor above the landing head 27. As shown in Fig. 13 a piece of equipment 145 has been latched to the landing head 27 before being deposited upon the wellhead 24. Specification 873,477 is referred to.
