Abstract

956,640. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 13, 1962 [July 26, 1961], No. 21037/62. Heading E1F. Apparatus for connecting a component 40 of an underwater wellhead to a tubular member 33 comprises a body 41 adapted to fit within the member, locking means 64 on the body for engaging the inside of the member, seal means 58 arranged on the outside of the body, and actuating elements 66, 68 respectively actuating the locking means and the seal means. The blow-out preventer 40 is fixed to the body which has latches 64 engaging grooves 65 in the casing head 33. The elements are formed on a piston 59 which when moved to its lower position simultaneously expands the seal 58 and projects the latches. In a modification in which the latches are above the seal, the elements are spaced on the piston so that the latches are projected before the seal is expanded. The blow-out preventer is fixed to a running string 42 by a further body 43. The blow-out preventer, the connections, and a cementing valve 38 are actuated by hydraulic fluid supplied by pipes 44 . . . 51. The blow-out preventer may carry at its upper end a body which is connected to a marine conductor.
