Abstract

1,262,754. Wells, &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 21 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 25844/69. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F2] A wellhead connector 30 comprises a body member 35 lowerable from a surface vessel on a pipe string 29 to mate with an upstanding member 28 of a subaqueous wellhead assembly 25, and a member 45 mounted for downward axial movement to connect conduits 37, 38 carried thereby with corresponding connectors 69, 70 in the member 28. The connector 30 is lowered over the wellhead member with the aid of a sonar unit 40 and a TV camera 41 and lamp 42 until a stop 54 abuts the top of the member 28, whereupon latches 55 are actuated to engage recesses 55 in the member 28. The member 45, which is normally biassed upwardly, is then depressed by passing hydraulic fluid from accumulators 50 or a conduit 53 connected to the surface vessel, into a chamber 49 behind a piston flange 46. The ends 65, 66 of the conduits 37, 38 are matingly received in the connectors 69, 70 in the member 28 to form a fluid tight connection. Electrical connections between the member 45 and the member 28 may be completed in similar fashion. A latch 72 is actuated to hold the member 45 in its depressed position.
