Abstract

945,232. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 13, 1962 [June 15, 1961], No. 22749/62. Heading E1F. Apparatus adapted to be pumped through a two diameter pipe 21 comprises a first body member 32, 32a having sealing means 34, 35 to slidably engage the larger diameter portion of the pipe, a flow passage 62 through the first body member, a second body member 70, 71 having sealing means to slidably engage the smaller diameter portion of the pipe, and a detachable connector 51 fixed to the first body member for coaxially connecting the first and second body members. The larger diameter portion extends from an underwater well, and the smaller diameter portion has the same diameter as and is connected to a tubing string of the well. The second body member carries a well tool 74 which is to be placed in the tubing, and a probe 52 which is engaged by a latch 53 whilst the apparatus is pumped through the larger diameter portion. When the smaller diameter portion is reached the latch pivots into a groove 57 in the pipe to release the probe, and the pressure of fluid passing through passage 62 forces the second body member and tool into the tubing string. As the probe is removed from the connector a latch 56 pivots outwardly into the groove to lock the first body member to the pipe. When the tool and second body member are pumped out of the tubing string and pipe, the probe removes the latch 56 from the groove and the pumping pressure in conjunction with a bevel 60 on the latch 63 pivots the latch 63 out of the groove so that the body members are connected during removal from the pipe.
