Abstract

948,324. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Aug. 23, 1960 [Aug. 25, 1959], No. 29117/60. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F2] Subaqueous wellhead apparatus comprises casing 30, an assembly, enclosed within a housing 25, closing the casing and removably secured thereto, a production flow line 28, 28a connected to the assembly, a remotely-controlled coupling 40, 41 in the flowline, a portion 28 of the flowline and a portion 40 of the coupling being fixed relative the assembly, means extending between the apparatus and the surface of the water for lowering the portion 41 of the coupling and a portion 28a of the flowline into coaxial relationship with the part 40 of the coupling, and a remotely controlled and powerdriven prime mover carried by one portion of the coupling for forcing it axially into fluid-tight connection with the other part of the coupling. The housing 25 is lowered into position by a string 32 and has arms 21 which are guided by cables 24 and slotted tubes 17. The portion 41 is fixed to a carriage 42 having a framework 43, 45 slidable on a cable 48 to engage a slotted guided tube 51. The portions of the coupling are connected by applying fluid at pressure to a conduit 55. The fluid passes through duct 75 and port 88 to move pistons 81, 73, which are coupled together, to the right together with a cylindrical housing 84 which carries locking dogs 93. When the portions of the coupling are in contact the face 107 of the portion 41 depresses a valve 106 so that duct 108 is aligned with ducts 104, 105 and fluid is supplied to a chamber 102 to move a piston 92 to lock the dogs in groove 94 of the portion 41. The coupling is disengaged by applying fluid at pressure to a conduit 56 to pass through ducts 78, 66, port 115, ducts 70, 114, 113, to move the piston 92 to unlock the dogs. As the piston 92 reaches the end of its travel a duct 110 therein aligns with duct 111 so that fluid flows through ducts 110, 111, 112, 76 and port 77 to move the pistons 81, 73 to the left.
