Abstract

1281059 Two-part couplings TEXAS GAS TRANSMISSION CORP 31 Oct 1969 [4 Nov 1968] 53537/69 Heading H2E An hermaphroditic connector for mating underwater or in an explosive or similar atmosphere has a body 10 of styrene butadiene rubber with split-blade contacts 11 protected by a layer 20 of mastic such as a silicone putty. The layer 20 is pierced by the contacts 11 on mating with a similar connector so oriented that its contacts 11<SP>1</SP> are perpendicular to the contacts 11, and mast ic is extruded from between faces 13 on the bodies, aided by radial grooves 44, 45. Mastic is also extruded axially through a passage 22, Fig. 2, and retained by an expandable diaphragm 29 for pressure equalization at ocean depths. The body 10 has an aligning boss 17 of split conical form and a corresponding recess 28. The contacts 11 consist of two contiguous blades 14, 15 and the body may have apertures 16, for the corresponding contacts 11<SP>1</SP>. The two connectors are preferably held together by a central through-bolt (32, Fig. 6, not shown) and an auxiliary peripheral seal of two 0-rings (40, 40<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, not shown) may be provided to protect the internally retained mastic. Suggested alternative materials for the mastic are rubber compounds, epoxies, and petroleum derivatives.
