Abstract

1463931 Two-part couplings CONTINENTAL OIL CO 24 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 3263/75 Heading H2E [Also in Divisions F2 and E1] The ends of a conductor 20 at a screw joint in a drill string are connected by annular contacts 30, 32 which are mounted (at least one resiliently mounted) in grooves 34, 36 one in each of the mating portions 12, 14 of the drill string, the mating surfaces of the contacts being inclined to the axis 42 of the drill string and therebeing first and second sealing means 48, 50 to seal the contacts from fluids 44, 46 outside and inside the drill string. The portions 12, 14 each comprise a passageway 22 containing the conductor 20, a shoulder 24, 26 and screw threaded regions 16, 18 with the grooves 34, 36 therebetween. Each groove holds a resilient insulation 38, 40 mounting the contacts whose mating surfaces are inclined at 15-65 degrees to the axis 42. The sealing means 50 comprises a resilient 0-ring in a groove 54 while sealing means 48 comprises the mating junction of the shoulders 24, 26. Other embodiments show both sealing means comprising 0-rings in grooves on one and/or the other of both portions 12, 14. Insulation 38 may be more resilient than the insulation 40.
