Abstract
958,734. Oil wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Aug. 28, 1962, No. 33072/62. Heading E1F. Apparatus to be pumped through a pipe 10 comprises an expansible, annular packer 12 carried coaxially on a body 11, cups 14, 15 securing opposite ends of the packer to the body, and a fluid port 24 connecting the interior of the packers to a space outside the apparatus. Packers 12, 13 are carried by the body, which has a ball-and-socket joint 21 to facilitate movement of the apparatus in curved sections of a well tubing. The body has a fishing head 22 and a latching device 27 for carrying tools. To run a tool to the bottom of a well, fluid pressure is applied above the apparatus, the fluid passing the packer 13 to enter the port 24 to expand the packer 12 against the wall of the tubing. To move the apparatus upwards, fluid pressure is applied beneath the apparatus, causing the packer 13 to expand. In a first modification (not shown), the packers are inverted so that packers 12, 13 serve as pistons on upward and downward movement respectively. In a second modification, Fig. 3, the fishing head and latching device are omitted, and the pressure fluid enters the interior of the packers 12b, 13b through ports 24b 25b. The upper half of the embodiment of Fig. 3, without the joint 21b, may be used alone as a one-way pumpable barrier. The apparatus may be used to push tools through the tubing or to remove plugs and paraffin from the tubing.
