In a retrievable bridge plug comprising inner and outer bodies 1, 4, valves 83, 80 carried by the inner body, packers 61, 62 carried by the outer body, a conical expander 37 on the outer body, slips 31 slidable on the outer body, and a drag member 6 slidable on the outer body and connected to the slips, latches (40) (Fig. 5 not shown), are provided on the drag member to releasably connect the drag and outer members to prevent setting of the plug until the latches engage casing of sufficiently small diameter. The body I is connected by a torsion spring 100 to a running head 3 and engages a cross head 92 so that during running-in, of the plug, the drag member and outer body travel together to prevent setting of the plug. When the position at which the plug is to be set is reached, the running-in pressure is relieved from the body 1 which is then moved slightly upwards under the action of a spring 81 to render the crosshead inoperative so that the plug may be set (as shown) by fluid pressure from above against the packer 61 and closed valve 83, or by pressure from below packer 62 and closed valve 80. The plug may be test set by turning the head relative to the body 1 and pressing downwardly so that the head acts directly to move the body 4 downwardly without engaging the cross shaft with the drag member.
