An anchor assembly for a well packer or bridge plug comprises upwardly and downwardly holding slips 20, 21 movable against a well casing C by conical expander surfaces 46, 47 on a mandrel 9 and coupled together for movement as a unit relative to the surfaces, by cross bars 34, 35 and an inner mandrel 33 slidable relative to the mandrel 9, Fig. 3. Alternatively, the inner mandrel may couple the surfaces 46, 47 together for movement as a unit relative to the slips. The bars extend through slots 37, 42 in the mandrel 9 and through a lost motion slot 49 in a control member 1, extending upwardly, Fig. 1a, through a packing body 7 fixed to the mandrel 9. When the packer has been run into position in the well, the control member which comprises a control head 3 and a connector head 48, assumes the intermediate position shown in Fig. 1a wherein spring urged valve members 80, 83 carried by members 59, 50 attached to the mandrel 9 and co-operating with flanges 86, 87 on the control member are both in an open position. When the well fluid pressure below the packer increases the packing body 7 moves upwards relative to drag blocks 13 on the mandrel 9 so that the upwardly holding slips 20 are forced against the casing by the surface 46. When the fluid pressure above the packer increases, the packing body is depressed so that the downwardly holding slips 21 are moved against the casing by the surface 47. To test set the packer, the control head 3 is raised so that fingers 96 on the head are lifted clear of co-operating slots 95 in the member 59. The control head is given a quarter-turn relative to the member 1 against the force of a torsion spring 100, so that the bottom ends of the fingers 96 seat on shoulders such as 104 on the member 59. The control head 3 is depressed under torque so that the mandrel 9 and surface 47 move the slips 21 against the casing. the elongated slot 49 in the control member 1 taking up the lost motion relative to the crossbar 34.
