1334771 Well packers SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORP 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970] 9935/71 Heading E1F Well packer has a by-pass 59 (Fig. 1C) between parts 60, 61 on opposite sides of the packing elements 24, and a sleeve valve 62 is lowered to close the by-pass, by engagement with the surface 64, when the packer is set. The packer has a mandrel 11 with projecting shoulders 67 (Fig. 1B) and 68 (Fig. 1A) which engage a ring 66 on the sleeve valve to operate the valve. This arrangement allows a long stroke to be provided for the mandrel. The mandrel is connected by a J-slot 53 (Fig. 1D) to a lower slip assembly 37, from which it is released and lowered to set the packer. Upper slips 76 (Fig. 1B) are expanded by downward movement of an annular piston 80 (Fig. 1A) produced by excess pressure below the packer which leaks along gaps 95 and 94. The mandrel is locked in the lowered position by lugs 19 engaging slots 21' (Fig. 1A). The packer is released by upward movement of the mandrel; shoulders 66, 67 (Fig. 1B) engage to raise and open the valve, and shoulder 90 on the valve sleeve engages shoulder 91 to release the upper slip wedges 81. In another embodiment (Figs. 3A, 3B), the annular piston does not slide over the valve sleeve, but slides on the inner surface of the body, and is raised to free the slips by the valve abutting it from below.
