A well packer A comprises a body 10 carrying a resilient packing 33, actuating means 17, 31 engaging the upper part of the packing, actuating means 54, 45, 35 engaging the lower part of the packing, hydraulicallyoperated means 55, 59 on the sleeves 31, 54 of the actuating means responsive to the hydrostatic head of fluid in the well for shifting the actuating means relative to each other to force the packing into contact with casing B, means 67, 75 for preventing the head moving the actuating means, and means 78 for shifting the preventing means to an inoperative position. Figs. 1, 1a show the packer attached to tubing C, 15 and being run into the casing. The packer is set by dropping a ball 85 through tubing C and applying pressure so that a pin 84 is sheared and a valve 82 is moved to open ports 80, 81 in the body and the sleeve 31, the ball then falling to the bottom of the well. Well fluid entering the ports moves a piston 70 to shear the pin 67 and move the sleeve 54 which is then moved upwardly by the fluid pressure on the end 59 to shift slips 45 into engagement with the casing. The movement of the piston permits movement of a key 75 under the action of the spring 78 to free the sleeve 31 from the body so that fluid acting downwardly on the piston 55 moves the sleeve 31 downwardly against the pressure of air in a chamber 58. The movement of the sleeves forces the packing into engagement with the casing and sets the slips to preclude downward movement of the packer. If the pressure of fluid below the packing tends to lift the packer movement of the packer is prevented by the increase in fluid pressure in the space 32, 31 which acts on the inner ends of pistons 23 to force wiskers 24 into engagement with the casing. A pin 105 on the sleeve 31 engages a shoulder 106 on the body to prevent contraction of the tubing C opening a port 93. The packer is released by pulling the tubing C sufficiently to shear the pin 95 and open the port 93 so that fluid flows into the chamber 58 to counteract the pressures acting on the sleeves. Further upward pulling on the tubing C may remove the packer from the casing. In a modification a connector 12a directly connects the tubing C with the member 17 and sleeve 31 as well as the body 10, the pin 105 being dispensed with. When the packer is to be released the tubing C is rotated, to disconnect the member 17 from the body.
